Video Story Time!

Gilmer Library Offers Weekly Video Story Time

Gilmer Public Library now offers online video Story Time for children once a week at The Story Time videos are posted every Thursday afternoon.

Because COVID 19 restrictions prevent the library from having group meetings and gatherings indoors, GPL shifted the weekly in-house story time to video format. Story Time is presented by Assistant Librarian Monica Goguen, who reads and record the stories, then edits them to incorporate background music.

Video Story Time is appropriate for elementary level children, featuring books available in the library’s collection. Having launched in September, the video posts are already popular with homeschool parents and groups within West Virginia and nationwide. Patrons and viewers are encouraged to watch, share, and comment on the videos.

Video story readings are beholden to copyright laws and regulations. Several book publishers have granted open permissions for their books to be presented via video through 2020. Thus, the recorded Story Time videos will remain on the library’s Facebook page until December 31, 2020 — or longer if the publisher permission period is extended.

Gilmer Public Library is open Monday-Friday 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. State law requires the library to be open at least 40 hours a week, including at least five hours outside the normal workday schedule so those who work are still able to access library services. Currently, eight people are permitted inside the building at one time, and face masks are requested.

GPL is funded by a grant from the West Virginia Library Commission and Gilmer County Levy Funds. These funds are supplemented by the support of Friends of The Library, Inc., additional grant sources, and private donations. For more information, call 304-462-5620.
